Biography

Charles Laitife Hyder was born and graduated from high school in the city of Albuquerque , New Mexico , served in the US Air Force during the Korean War [1] [3] .

In 1958 he graduated from the University of New Mexico and in 1964 received a degree in astrogeophysics in Colorado [3] . In 1961-1983 he was engaged in scientific activities in the field of solar physics (specialist in solar flares ), published more than 50 works [1] . His colleagues in the obituary noted high qualifications in physics (not only astrophysics, but also in quantum mechanics), as well as a high mathematical culture.

He fought against nuclear weapons, environmental pollution by nuclear energy products, and also against the construction of a radioactive waste storage facility ( Waste Isolation Pilot Plant ) near the city of Carlsbad ( New Mexico ) [1] [4] [5] .

Hunger strike

September 23, 1986 at the White House in Washington began a hunger strike , which lasted until the end of April next year - 218 days.

He demanded that the Ronald Reagan administration stop the arms race and abandon the use of nuclear weapons .

A campaign of solidarity with Hyder was launched in the Soviet Union. He was regularly shown in the Vremya program, newsletters on the health status of Comrade Haider were regularly published in Soviet newspapers, a commemorative medal was struck in his honor, Mikhail Gorbachev wrote a letter to him, and when the hunger strike ended, the Zero group composed a satirical song “ Dr. Hyder ":

And in this difficult hour for each of us -
Dr. Hyder, Dr. Hyder, Dr. Hyder
I started eating again!

After a hunger strike

After the hunger strike ended, Haider told the Soviet press, friends and passersby that he was starting the election campaign for the US presidency, offering to write his name on the ballots. Hyder said that with this gesture he wants to attract more public attention to the problems that concern him. [6] In 1998, he published the book Surviving Humanity on a Plutonium-Infected Planet, and again tried to starve (this time to fight the nuclear waste storage facility, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant ) [7] .

He died in June 2004.
