Pteropod silt is a type of modern oceanic deep-sea calcareous clay silt containing a large number of calcareous shells of pteropod mollusks and their fragments.
60–80% pteropodic sludge consists of aragonite (CaCO 3 ), the remainder is clay material. This type of sludge is found in warm, mainly tropical parts of the World Ocean , mainly in the waters of the Atlantic , at a depth of 700–3500 m, and occupies a total of about 0.4% of the bottom area of the World Ocean.
