The plant is valued for its aesthetic qualities. The seeds of this bindweed are sometimes used as a relaxing remedy in Hawaii, mainly instead of alcohol .

Since December 31, 2009 in Russia, Hawaiian rose seeds have been included in List I of the List of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors subject to control in the Russian Federation (trafficking is prohibited) [3] [4] .

The common English name for the plant is Hawaiian baby woodrose ("small Hawaiian tree rose"; this name should not be confused with the similar English name, Hawaiian Woodrose , which refers to another species - Merremia tuberosa ). Other names of the plant - "Elephant Dredge", "Shaggy morning glory."

Distribution

A plant native to the Indian Peninsula , it grows around the world, especially in places such as Hawaii , Africa , and the Caribbean .

Chemical Composition

Plant seeds contain numerous lysergic acid amides , including ergin , ergonovin , and isoergin . From this chemical group comes the well-known psychedelic LSD . The psychoactive effects experienced after consuming the seeds are usually attributed to ergin (also known as d-lysergic acid amide, LSA or LA-111), although the validity of this statement is disputed.

In the United States, Ergin is on the DEA Schedule III list. In this case, the plant itself remains legal. Accordingly, the possession of any part of the plant is completely legal. At the same time, the extraction of ergin in the United States is prosecuted, however, cases that it worked, has not yet been recorded. The plant there is not controlled as a precursor to the profiling substances, since the synthesis of LSD from ergin is possible, but not practical.

Seeds also contain glycosides . These compounds may cause some of the noted side effects from their use. Many people believe that the fluffy coating of seeds is the main cause of the " sea sickness ", but it is known that this "fur" is inert; most likely, the nauseating factor is contained in the seeds themselves.

History

Rosa Hawaiian is a rare example of a plant whose hallucinogenic properties have been discovered relatively recently. While other plants from the Convolvulaceae family, such as Rivea corymbosa (local name is Ololiuhqui ) and Ipomoea violacea (local name is Tlitliltzin ) have been used in Latin American shamanistic rituals for centuries, the Hawaiian rose has traditionally gone unnoticed as a hallucinogen. Its properties were first studied in the 1960s , while it turned out that the chemical composition of its seeds is almost identical to the two types mentioned above, and in fact it has the highest concentration of psychoactive substances from the entire family.

The traditional use of a plant in India implied the use of plant leaves and roots (which do not have psychoactive properties) as antiseptic and anti-inflammatory drugs.

The psychedelic properties of seeds became known mainly through their use in Hawaii, Haiti and Puerto Rico , where impoverished members of the population took seeds in search of a “cheap buzz” as an alternative to alcohol. The sample soon came to Albert Hofmann (professor who discovered LSD ), who confirmed the psychoactive properties and analyzed the chemical composition.

Meaning and Application

Psychotropic use

Hawaiian Rose Seeds

The effects of oral seed intake are comparable to those of LSD. The experience is usually described as “characteristically psychedelic” (descriptions vary depending on the dose taken and the cultural background of the user). The effect is visual, with some changes in space with open eyes and patterns with eyes closed. The most noticeable effects are mental, and changes in sound perception are also sometimes noted. Temporal and spatial perception is seriously disturbed, causing a typical hallucination sensation: “five minutes seems like an hour, and an hour seems like five minutes”. Some observe a feeling of fatigue during the experience.

The most famous slang names for Hawaiian roses are: “Brown Pill”, “Tropical Pebbles”.

Seeds, like LSD, can cause uterine contractions, leading to miscarriages when consumed during pregnancy .
