History

The first evidence of the diocese of Salamanca dates from the 589th year, when the bishop Eleutherius took part in the III Council of Toledo . From 666, the diocese of Salamanca was part of the metropolis of Merida (today the Archdiocese of Merida-Badajoz ). After the Arab invasion in the 7th century and until the 11th century, the diocese of Salamanca fell into decay. There are several fragmentary references to the bishops of Salamanca of this time.

The first documented evidence after liberation from Arab domination dates from the beginning of the XII century. On June 22, 1102, Bishop Jerome was appointed to Salamanca.

In 1120, the diocese of Salamanca entered the metropolis of Santiago de Compostela . On February 24, 1124, Pope Calixt II issued a bull, which he authorized this entry.

On October 31, 1778, a diocesan seminary was opened in Salamanca.

On July 4, 1857, the diocese of Salamanca entered the metropolis of Valladolid.
