The South Basin , also known as the South Pacific Basin [1], is a vast underwater basin in the south-western part of the Pacific Ocean .
From the west, the basin is bounded by the mountain structures of the island arcs of Tonga , Kermadek and New Zealand , the New Zealand underwater plateau , the Macquarie submarine ridge, in the north by the submarine bases of the Cook Islands and Tubouai islands , in the East and South - by the South Pacific and the Mediterranean vegas. [2] .
Abyssal hills and undulating plains dominate at the bottom of the basin, and separate seamounts are also characteristic. The depths here are more than 5000 m, maximum - 6600 m [1] in the southern part. The bottom is composed mainly of red clays and diatomaceous silts [2] .
