AZCA (acronym for Asociación Mixta de Compensación de la Manzana A de la Zona Comercial de la Avenida del Generalísimo , Mixed association to compensate for block A of the commercial area of the Prospect Generalissimo ) - financial district in downtown Madrid ( Spain ) between the streets of Raimundo Fernandez Villailla Ourense , General Peron and Paseo de la Castellana Boulevard.
The original concept of the quarter, as well as its name, first appeared in the "Master Plan for the City of Madrid", adopted in 1946. The purpose of this plan was to create a large block of modern office buildings with metro and rail lines in a developing area in the north of Madrid, right in front of the Real Madrid stadium (now called Santiago Bernabeu and next to the new complex of government buildings Nuevos Ministerios . there was also a botanical garden, a library and an opera building, but they were never built.
The construction of the quarter began in the 1970s after multiple delays. Now here are some of the highest and most beautiful modern Madrid skyscrapers . The most significant of them:
- Picasso Tower - 157 m, architect Minoru Yamasaki
- Europe Tower - 121 m
- Banco de Bilbao Tower ( Spanish ) - 107 m, architect Francisco Javier Saens de Oysa ( Spanish )
- Titania Tower ( Spanish ) - 103.7 m
- Mau Tower ( Torre Mahou ) - 85 m
- Banco Santander Tower
On May 1, 2002, a car stuffed with 20 kg of explosives exploded in front of Tower Europe, injuring 16 people.
In February 2005, the Windsor Tower skyscraper (106 m) was destroyed by fire .
At night on weekends, underground floors attract the Latin public to discotheques , but they also have a poor reputation due to banditry and violence [1] .
In 2007, the new Quatro Torres skyscraper area was built north of Piazza Castile.
