Early years
Morio Higaonna was born on December 25, 1938 in Naha , Okinawa . [8] [9] [10] He began studying karate with the Shorin-ryu style at the age of 14, first under the guidance of his own father, and later became a student of his father's friend, Tsunetaka Shimabukuro. [8] It was precisely that Shimabukuro who advised Morio Higaonna to study goju-ryu in the Chojun Miyagi dojo . [eight]
In the early 1950s, Morio Higaonna began training under the leadership of Miyazato Eichi [11] [12] (one of the oldest students of Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953), the founder of goju-ryu) and Anichi Miyagi [13] .
Morio Higaonna was certified in the black belt by Sensei Miyazato in 1957. [10] In 1960, he moved to Tokyo to study at Takushoku University. [8] In the same year, December 30, Morio Higaonna was certified for the third dan during the first all-style dan grading conducted by Okinawa Karate-do Renmei. [8] [13] Soon, he was invited to teach in Tokyo, at the Yoyogi dojo, where Morio Higaonna managed to attract a huge number of students. [13] [14]
