Biography
Hans Vredeman de Vries according to van Mander was born in 1527 in Leeuwarden to a family of German emigrants, his father was a military man. In Leeuwarden, Vredeman was a pupil of the glass painter Reyer Gerritsen. After staying in Mechelen de Vries in 1549, he took part in decorative works for the triumphal entrance of Charles V and his son Philip to Antwerp . After that, he settled in Colloom ( Friesland ), where he met a carpenter who owned publications by the famous engraver Cook van Alst , and then delved into the study of Serlio and Vitruvius . The result is excellent knowledge of architectural forms and perspectives. In 1555, the first collection of Vredeman was published - a book of cartouches (a notebook of architectural and ornamental motifs). Following this release, a long series of others followed, and, in addition, Vredeman painted [1] .
In 1561, he again works in Mechelen and writes architectural paintings here. In 1563, his book "Architecture" was published in Antwerp. From 1565 to 1570 and from 1576 to 1586, the master lives in Antwerp . Between these years - in Aachen , where he fled from the persecution of the Duke of Alba, and in Luttiha .
The last ten years of his stay in Antwerp, Vredeman has been in the service of the city. In 1586, the master sent through Frankfurt to Wolfenbüttel , in 1589 to Braunschweig , in 1591 to Hamburg, in 1592 to Danzig . After that, he again visits Hamburg, Prague (here his son Paul was busy with work for the emperor, and Vredeman himself writes, to the delight of Emperor Rudolph II , a number of perspectives in his palace of Hradchin ), The Hague, Hamburg and again Amsterdam ( 1601 ). In 1604, he published his main work: "Perspectiva dat is de hooch gheruemde conste ...".
In 1604, he petitioned Leiden University to accept him as a lecturer in architecture, but he was refused, despite the patronage of Prince Moritz.
The year of death of Vredeman is unknown, but it is known that at the time of the inheritance, his son Paul lived in Hamburg.
