Biography Facts
Erich Butner grew up in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin and was first trained in glass art. From 1906 to 1911 he studied painting , graphics and book illustration under the guidance of portrait painter Emil Orlik at the educational institution at the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts in Berlin.
He was a member of the German Union of Artists [3] , and since 1908, Butner was part of the Berlin Secession and took part in group exhibitions of this association of artists.
In 1913, Buttner’s first solo exhibition was held at the Gurlitt Gallery in Berlin. The main creative period was in the 1920s. Buttner died at Freiburg in 1936 at the age of 47.
In 1928, Erich Buttner participated in the painting arts competition during the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam , but did not win any awards. He presented three of his paintings at the art exhibition: “BSC Club Playground” ( French Terrain de sport du BSC ), “Heringsdorf Tennis Competition” ( Concours de tennis à Heringsdorf ), “Tennis Competition in Grunewald” ( French Concours de tennis à Grünewald ) [4] .
Creativity
Buttner's pictorial and graphic works are marked by the dynamics of color and form characteristic of expressionism , and he focuses on portraits in the choice of subjects. In the 20s, Buttner created a whole portrait series of his friends and colleagues of the artists Lovis Corint , Georg Gross , Arno Holtz and Heinrich Zille , as well as scientists, for example, a 1920 portrait of Albert Einstein [5] .
Despite the short period of creativity, Buttner created many works that are attractive to museums and private collections. They can be seen at the meeting of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation , at the Kreuzberg Culture Authority [6] , at the Los Angeles Museum of Art. The portrait of Heinrich Zille by Erich Butner is exhibited in the Brandenburg Museum of Berlin.
