History

The company was founded by Bruno Bonnel and Christoph Sapé in Lyon ( France ) in 1983 . Initially, the founders planned to call her Zboub Système , but then they were dissuaded by a lawyer [4] . According to Bonnell, a computer program generating random word combinations was used to select the name. One of the issued words turned out to be “Infogramme”: a combination of the French words “informatique” ( Russian information technology ) and “programme” ( Russian computer program ). As a result, this combination was selected and slightly modified, which turned into "Infogrames". In 1985 , when the company moved to Viyerbahn , an animal battleship was chosen as the logo. In an interview, Bonnell commented on this: “This dinosaur [ sic ] is our symbol. Battleships have always survived, adapting to environmental conditions: from melting glaciers to abnormal heat ” [4] . In 1987, a subsidiary of Infogrames Télématique was founded, the aim of which was to create and publish games. In the late 1980s, the company was spotted on the market as it released games with original ideas. Infogrames has acquired a number of licenses for the development of games on French-Belgian comics, such as The Adventures of Tintin , Asterix , Les Tuniques Bleues .

In 1992, the famous game Alone in the Dark , one of the first survival horror games , was released. In 1993, the Asterix game was released, with a circulation of 2.4 million copies.

Since 1996, a large-scale campaign to absorb other manufacturers of computer games has begun. It lasted more than 7 years and during this time more than $ 500 million was spent; Infogrames goal was to become a leading publisher in the field of computer games industry [5] . Although the company's debt from $ 55 million in 1999 increased to $ 493 million in 2002, Infogrames revenue also increased from $ 246 to $ 650 million over the same period [6] .

In 1996, Infogrames bought Ocean Software for about $ 100 million [7] and named it Infogrames UK [8] . In July 1997, Infogrames took over Philips Media BV.

In 1999, IESA bought Gremlin Interactive for $ 40 million and renamed it Infogrames Sheffield House; however, this company was closed in 2003 [9] . In the same year, IESA acquired Accolade for $ 60 million [10] [11] and Beam Software , later renamed Infogrames Melbourne House Pty Ltd [12]

In October 2001, IESA re-released the Atari brand after the MXrider game developed by Atari Interactive , Inc. went on sale. - at that time a subsidiary of Infogrames Interactive, Inc. [13] [14] On May 7, 2003, the IESA officially reorganized its US division of Infogrames Inc. [15] into a separate company called Atari Inc., listed on the NASDAQ . Subordinate European units were renamed Atari Europe; Infogrames Interactive, Inc. was renamed Atari Interactive , Inc. [13] . Infogrames Australia Pty Ltd became Atari Australia Pty Ltd [16] ; Infogrames Melbourne House Pty Ltd - Atari Melbourne House Pty Ltd [12] . Infogrames UK was renamed Atari UK [8] , IESA became a holding company [17] .
