History

After the expulsion in 1983 of The Clash Mick Jones - one of the founders of the group - Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon took on his place two guitarists: Nick Sheppard and Vince White. In early 1985, CBS brought to the notice of the ensemble that they were expecting a new album from it - a very controversial contract for The Clash was to have 8 more albums. The recording of the new album took place in Munich . Suddenly for all the manager Bernie Rhodes began to show interest in the musical process of the band itself and took part in writing new songs and arrangements. According to his concept, the album was supposed to sound modern - both ideologically and musically. Thanks to him, computers were involved, with the result that drummer Pete Howard found himself unnecessary at the sessions and barely participated in the recording.

After recording in Munich, Rhodes put the album together in London. The result of his work became known on November 8, 1985, when the album appeared on store shelves. The album ranked 16th in the UK charts, from which it quickly came out, and was subjected to devastating criticism in the press. The album horrified the musicians themselves, especially Joe Strummer: the singer and co-author of all the compositions of the album felt betrayed by the work of Bernie Rhodes, who overloaded the record with drum machines and clumsy synth effects. The album was preceded by " This Is England " - the only single from "Cut the Crap" - which took 24th place.

Subsequently, Cut the Crap was completely erased from The Clash's discography: the songs were not included in the compilation for a long time, it was not mentioned in the biographical film Westway To The World , made in close collaboration with former musicians of the group. The failure of this album determined the fate of the group: by that time it became clear to Strammer that the expulsion of Khidon and especially Jones were fatal mistakes, as well as Rhodes’s admission to the band’s work, and at the end of 1985 he disbanded the ensemble.
