History
The company was founded as a lumber trading company by Gustav Adolf Flyderer (1845–1896) in 1894 in the city of Heilbronn . After his early death, the case was continued by his sons Adolf Flyderer (1877-1957) and Paul Otto Flyderer (1880-1960) [2] . After World War I, the brothers expanded the company, and it became a manufacturer of wood products. In 1919, a sawmill was purchased in Neumarkt, later a paper mill in Taysnach and a steam sawmill in Bad Großpertholz . The company also expanded thanks to another brother, Georg Flyderer (1892-1973), who planned the plant in Neumarkt as an architect and has been a member of the management board since 1927. In 1931, the company's headquarters moved to Neumarkt [3] [4] .
In 1949, the management of the company passed to the son of Paul Otto Flyderer Herbert Flyderer (1912-1982). Under his leadership, the company expanded its product range, including the production of railway sleepers and concrete supports. By 1960, the company became the largest German manufacturer of wood products [5] . In 1962, the production of chipboards began, which is constantly expanding. Around 1970, Pfleiderer already had over 1,000 employees [3] . In 1973, control passed to Ernst-Herbert Flyder, the son of Herbert Flyder.
Since the early 1980s, the company has expanded its investments in other areas of the production of building materials. In the late 1990s, the Pfleiderer Group employed 11,200 people in 40 industries. The new major shareholder was One Equity Partners, with a 23.3% stake in 2009 [6] .
The company has grown to become one of Europe's largest manufacturers of wood-based materials. When in 2003 the leadership passed to Hans Overdiek, a policy of rapid expansion was launched. The company has borrowed excessively borrowed funds and made deals with inflated value. Loans were sent to fight for the US housing market. When the real estate crisis ripened in 2008, Pfleiderer’s high debt burden turned into a financial disaster that led the company to bankruptcy in March 2012 [7] [8] . With nearly one billion euros of net debt, Pfleiderer has become one of the largest corporate failures of the modern German economy.
As of 2013, the company successfully emerged from bankruptcy. This was achieved mainly through the sale of many business units, including the production of laminate and curtailing all activities in the United States [9] .
Since January 2016, the company has been owned by the Pfleiderer Group, headquartered in Wroclaw (Poland) and is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange .
