“Mattress” ( Rus. Mattress ), also known as “Once Upon a Mattress” ( Rus. Once on the Mattress ) is the twelfth episode of the first season of the American musical television series “ Choir ”, shown on Fox on December 2, 2011 [1] . According to the plot of the episode, the choral club is deprived of a page in the school yearbook, and none of the choir members, except Rachel, wants to be photographed for him. To raise their social status, the club decides to star in an advertisement for mattresses, and meanwhile, Will learns that his wife, Terry, was faking pregnancy. Actress Jessalyn Gilsig suggested that the “Mattress” episode could be the moment when the members of the “anti-Terry” team join the “Terry team”. The series featured cover versions of four songs, three of which were released as singles, [2] , and also included in the album Glee: The Music, Volume 2 [3] .

Story
Sue Sylvester ( Jane Lynch ) convinces the headmaster of Figgins School (Aikbal Teba) not to include in the school yearbook a photograph of the choral club, since in previous years the photos of the choir members were regularly vandalized by other students. Choir leader Will Schuster ( Matthew Morrison ) buys a small ad space on the last page of the yearbook to put photos of his students there, but you can put two photos of them there. Fearing a fall in popularity, the club chooses Rachel ( Lea Michel ) as the presentation of the choir in the photo. She convinces Finn ( Cory Monteith ) to make her a couple, but after the students laugh, Finn refuses. When it turns out that the photographer for the annual is the director of advertising mattresses, Rachel convinces him to invite the choir, believing that this will raise the popularity of the choir in the person of other students.
Will is upset that the wedding of Emma Pilsberry ( Jayme Mays ) and school coach Ken Tanaka ( Patrick Gallagher ) will take place on the same day as the qualifying round. At home, Will learns that his wife Terry ( Jessaline Gilsig ) for several months lied to him about her pregnancy. He finds a false stomach, and Terry tells him the situation - she suffered from a hysterical pregnancy, but after learning about it, she decided to lie to her husband and adopt the child Quinn Fabre ( Dianna Agron ) to keep Will. Will leaves his wife and spends the night at the school, where he sleeps on one of the mattresses given by the choir shop as an advertising fee.
Sue reports that participation in advertising and receiving payment deprives the club of amateur status, and therefore can not participate in the qualifying. Quinn is trying to convince Sue to allow her to be photographed on the yearbook along with the rest of the support team, despite the fact that she left the team because of the pregnancy. She asks to donate for the choral club with one page out of six allocated to the support team. Sue agrees and invites Quinn to return to the support team, but she says she does not want to be a fan. Will announces to the club that he has no right to accompany the club to the qualifiers, as he was the one who accepted the payment by mattresses after participating in the advertisement. The episode ends with a general photo of the choir members in the yearbook, which is traditionally corrupted by other students of the school.
Reaction
The episode was watched by 8.17 million American television viewers, which was the highest figure for the series at the time [4] . In Canada, the show also reached the highest at that time line in the rating of television programs of the week - the ninth, with 1.8 million views [5] . Critics' reviews of the series turned out to be mixed. Entertainment Weekly's Dan Sanderson wrote that the episode is one step ahead of the last episode, Hairography, and its ending is one of the best featured at the time in the series [6] . Bobby Hackinson of the Houston Chronicle called the series “very good,” [7] but Mark Hale, a New York Times columnist , found the series “took a break” in this episode before the middle of the season [8] . Lisa Pradyu from Zap2it noted that with relief she looked at the scene of the long-awaited exposure of a false pregnancy. She also noted that the small number of songs in the episode was disappointing [9] , and Raymond Flanders from The Wall Street Journal musically noted only the song “Jump” [10] .
