Double gates ( niderl. Koppelpoort ) - gates of a medieval building in the Dutch city of Amersfoort . Their construction was completed around 1425 . Koppelport is an elegant example of medieval defensive architecture. This is a combined land and river entrance to the castle , located in the second wall of the defensive structure of the city of Amersfoort. The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 . The construction of the wall itself was completed around 1450.
The gate was attacked in 1427 during the siege of the city. This attack was repelled.
The gates were opened and closed every day by specially designated people (to bring the gate opening mechanism into effect, it was necessary to turn the wheel, marching inside it). At least twelve people gathered guard every morning and evening to complete this task. This was a very dangerous task, because if the “openers” of the gate could not march in the wheel synchronously and one of them fell, he could entail the rest after him. Such fatal incidents happened quite often. Before the gates could be lowered, it was necessary to lift them up to the stop so that the iron bars that held them could be pulled out. Only then could the gates be lowered. At the time when the gates were lowering, the wheel began to spin easier and faster, as a result of which, many people stumbled and broke their limbs.
Between 1969 and 1993, the puppet theater was at the gate. The last restoration of the gate was completed in 1996.
