Riverbed with Delta in the Eberswalde Crater

Former river with tributaries (west of the crater)
A snapshot of a dried river delta in the northwestern part of the Eberswalde Crater

The channel with the delta in the Eberswalde crater is a geological formation, presumably formed by a dried-up water river, in the Eberswalde crater in the south-west of Mars with a length of more than 60 km.

Location

The river basin channels are located in the southwestern hemisphere of Mars , west of the Eberswalde crater and north of the Holden crater.

Feature

The river flowed from west to east and had about 6 large tributaries (4 right and 2 left). The mouth was located on the northwest shore of a former reservoir located in the Eberswalde Crater. The highly branched river delta , which occupies about 115 kmΒ², is well preserved [1] . The length was more than 60 kilometers [2] . The source of the river was in the gorges, the middle course passed along the plain, and the lower one also passed through the deep gorge.

Learning

The 65 km Eberswalde Crater, in which the estuary was located, was formed 3.7 billion years ago as a result of a meteorite fall. Later, another, larger meteorite fell southwest, and part of the Eberswalde crater with the river delta was covered with rocks of the Holden crater. To date, the river delta is clearly visible as a result of the gradual erosion of sedimentary rocks [1] .

For the first time, a river delta was discovered in a photograph of the Mars Global Surveyor (1996-2006). The river was one of the contenders for the study of the new Mars rover - Mars Science Laboratory (launch at the end of 2011), however, in the end, it was decided to study the Gale crater [1] .

In early 2019, Roscosmos published a photograph of a delta in the colors of geological rocks made by the TGO apparatus [3] .
