The mountains are located at a distance of about 50-100 km from the Gulf of Oman . The highest point, Al-Sham (mountain of the Sun), reaches a height of over 3,000 m. The second largest point in Oman, Jabal Kaur , is also located in the mountains of El Akhdar.
In the upper regions of the mountains, annual precipitation reaches about 300 mm, which makes it possible to engage in agriculture. From this comes the name "Green Mountain".
From 1957 to 1959, clashes took place in the mountains between the Omani army and armed groups, which were supported by Saudi Arabia [1] .
