Biography

Born in Solikamsk in a family of salt farmers and salt traders.

In the early 1650s, he moved to Veliky Ustyug , painted the icon of the “Holy Savior” for the gateway Vsegrad church. When Fedor was called to the Armory Chamber in Moscow, it is unknown. According to his sons, in their petition written immediately after the death of their father, Fyodor served the three Russian tsars "forty years or more in the Armory in icon painters" (that is, he had been in the Armory since 1645). In the royal letter of February 10, 1660, it was reported that Fedor was the sovereign icon painter “before the plague” (1654). However, his name is not mentioned in well-known documents of this period.

The sons of Fedor Zubov, Alexei and Ivan, during the life of their father were not yet trained in the skill of the painter in infancy. After his death, they were assigned benefits, and they were trained by other masters. In the Petrine era, they became famous engravers.
