Criticism
Mitrofanov’s book “The Tragedy of Russia. “Forbidden” topics of the history of the twentieth century in church sermon and journalism ”, which is a collection of his articles and sermons from 1990 to 2000, caused a wide resonance and polar assessments. The book criticizes communism and also analyzes the state of affairs in modern (at the time of writing) Russia, in particular, according to the author, the Russian authorities make unsuccessful attempts to combine the "true ideals of 900-year-old Orthodox Russia with the false" idols "of the 70-year-old theocious USSR ” [10] .
Kirill Alexandrov , who held the post of senior scientist at St. Petersburg State University, noted that this book is "an event not only in the life of Russia and the Russian foreign countries, but also in the life of the Church, since it touched on the most painful topics of Russian Christian consciousness." Peter Bukharkin, a professor at St. Petersburg State University, stated that “Father George is characterized by independent thinking and deep faithfulness to traditions. For all its open politicization, the book is truly churchly. ” The book was also supported by hegumen Peter (Mescherinov) , in his opinion, “We live in another country, and the word“ Russia ”itself is not a synonym for historical Russia, but an absolute antonym” [10] .
Mitrofanov’s position was also supported by the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia , who, having examined the issue, decided that “when asked whether General A. A. Vlasov and his associates were traitors to Russia, we answer no. Everything that they undertook was done just for the Fatherland ... ” [11] .
On the other hand, opponents of Mitrofanov blamed the apologetics of the Vlasov movement, which is traced in the book. Mitrofanov said to his opponents who called him “church Vlasovite,” “Well, I’m pleased to be on a par with the literary Vlasov, whose books, without really reading, have been criticized, with Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn” [12] .
