Biography
Alexei Koshkin was born into a peasant family on September 20, 1920 in the village of Brynchagi, now the Pereslavl district of the Yaroslavl region . After seven years of school, he got a job at MTS , where he received the specialty of a tractor driver.
He was called up to the Red Army shortly before the start of World War II - in 1940 . He graduated from the Sumy Military Infantry School in 1942, receiving a lieutenant rank. A participant in the war since June 1942, took part in the battles on the Transcaucasian Front as part of the 1st Special Purpose Strike Unit of the Tuapse Defensive Region. On October 23, 1942, a platoon of machine gunners commanded by Koshkin was deployed to strengthen the position of the Soviet forces in the region of Mount Semashkho - 25 kilometers from Tuapse .
On the night of November 29-30, a platoon of Alexei Ivanovich was to knock out the enemy troops, making their way to Tuapse, from the saddle between the Semashkho and Two Brothers mountains. The enemy’s forces exceeded the platoon three times, but Koshkin’s machine gunners completed the task. At dawn, an enemy counterattack began under the cover of bombers. Alexei Koshkin received shrapnel wounds to both legs, but continued to command the battle and fire. During a heavy battle, the lieutenant was cut off from his own, and when enemy soldiers surrounded the wounded Koshkin, he, in order not to surrender, blew himself up with an anti-tank grenade, killing 6 German soldiers, including 3 officers, besides himself. After the death of the commander, the platoon managed to destroy the enemy company and gain a foothold in the saddle.
On March 31, 1943, for the courage and heroism shown during the performance of an important combat mission, Lieutenant Koshkin Alexei Ivanovich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
