Story
Corrado Cattani can not find peace of mind after the tragic events of past years. He is tormented by nightmares about the death of his daughter and wife. In search of reassurance, he comes to the monastery, where he meets Abbot Lovani, in the past - an influential politician who decided to devote the rest of his life to God. In the monastery, Cattani begins to gradually recover. But soon there he is found by a member of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bert Di Donato, collecting information about a certain Kemal Ifter, a Turkish arms dealer who is preparing to make a major deal and has close ties with Cattani's long-time enemy, Gianfranco Laudeo, now serving time for Cattani, five years in prison. Di Donato convinces Cattani to go to Milan and, with the threat of a new prison term, persuade Laudeo to disclose information on the Ifter deal being prepared. Laudeo draws the wrong conclusion from Cattani’s visit, thinking that he was being crushed by enemies - in particular, Carlo Antinari - a banker who decided to break up with dirty business, but whose Antinari bank is very necessary for Laudeo to complete the deal. Laudeo decides to retaliate and, through his lawyer, orders the kidnapping of Antinari's young, mentally unhealthy daughter, Greta. The abduction is not going according to plan, and one of the criminals, along with the girl, is blocked by the police in the forecourt. Television arrives at the station and begins direct reporting. Cattani, watching the report in his hotel, understands that the abduction involuntarily occurred through his fault. He rushes to the station and heroically rescues the girl, receiving a standing ovation and thanks from the Greta family. He meets the banker Antinari, his wife Anna and his eldest daughter, the journalist Julia, with whom Cattani has a relationship that gradually develops into love. In the house of Antinari Cattani also meets with the General Director of Antinari Bank - Dino Alessi. A little later it turns out that it was Alessi who initiated the large financial frauds. Alessi also has a secret love affair with Anna Antinari.
After the failure of the abduction, Laudeo, locked against the wall of Cattani and thrown by his partners from the underworld, decides to give revealing evidence, which he informs his lawyer. Dino Alessi, learning from the lawyer about the upcoming betrayal of Laudeo, immediately organizes the poisoning of Laudeo in prison, Laudeo dies. An investigation into the poisoning indicates the guilt of overseer Viviani, who himself soon dies in a mysterious car accident . Cattani, in collaboration with Di Donato, is unofficially investigating and discovers that shortly before the poisoning of Laudeo, Viviani insured his life for a huge amount in an insurance company controlled by Dino Alessi. Further investigation reveals that Viviani was ill with lung cancer in the last stage. Apparently, he knew and was ready for the fact that he would be killed after the poisoning of Laudeo, and he consciously went for it, hoping at the cost of his death to financially help his family. But insuring the life of a terminally ill person was a violation, which leads Cattani to the thought of Alessi's involvement in the criminal cases of Laudeo and Ifter. A little later, as unnecessary witnesses, the widow of Viviani and the doctor from the insurance company who examined Viviani's health are killed.
Alessi, sensing danger, orders to track down and destroy Bert Di Donato and his American intelligence officers. All of them perish during the assault organized by Alessi of their safe haven. Cattani is left alone again. Love for Julia was just beginning to bring him back to life, and after Bert's death, he decides to abandon his further struggle with the mafia and try to build his life with Julia.
Dino Alessi confronts the owner of the bank, Carl Antinari, with the fact that the refusal of the deal with Ifter threatens him with complete ruin. Antinari, determined to put an end to criminal fraud, goes to Sicily for help with his father, Nicola Antinari, the elderly founder of their family bank and an experienced financial trader. Nicola promises to help her son with the restoration of the position of the bank without participating in the Ifter transaction. Alessi soon also secretly comes to the senior Antinari, repeats the situation and says that Carlo, who violated the unspoken rules of the criminal business, is no longer suitable for the role of the president of the bank. Nicola Antinari agrees and gives the green light to a deal with Ifter, and also transfers the bank to Alessi's full management. After that, Alessi organizes the murder of Karl Antinari, ordering to furnish him as suicide . Nicola, learning about the death of her son and guessing that this is the work of Alessi, becomes furious and decides to eliminate him. He seeks help from the Sicilian mafia in the person of lawyer Terrazini, recently released from prison and returning to business. He offers Terrazini to take Alessi's place in the deal with Ifter and offers the mafia part of the profit from the deal. Terrazini agrees and gets a seat on the administrative board of Antinari Bank. Alessi is no longer needed. Gaetano (Tano) Cariddi , a long-time secretary and student of Nikola Antinari, out of respect for his mentor, takes on the dirty work and kills Dino Alessi in return for the death of Carlo Antinari. An ambitious, intelligent and cynical person, Tano also hopes to take Alessi's place at the helm of Antinari Bank in the future.
Julia, shocked by the death of her father, begins to collect information about the real situation in the bank. Soon she is kidnapped, beaten and threatened with death if she does not stop asking questions. She begins to understand how her family is tied up in dirty business, and is horrified. Cattani, meanwhile, having received important incriminating documents, decides to turn to Abbot Lovani for help in preventing the sale of weapons, knowing about the abbot's powerful past ties. Cattani is helped by Anna, the wife of Carlo Antinari, now convinced of Alessi's cunning and wanting to avenge her husband. Lovani agrees to help, but makes a mistake by contacting his former student and protégé, Professor Mattiner, who is directly involved in the Ifter-sponsored transaction. The mafia , now involved in the deal and receiving a signal from Mattinera, kills the abbot right in the monastery, along with Anna who hid there. It becomes clear that Cattani’s attempt to abandon the struggle and build a peaceful life with Julia is doomed to failure. Cattani takes his pistol again, sets off for Rome , and, having locked himself against the wall of Professor Mattineru, receives recognition from him. Immediately after this, the mafia kills Mattinera. Julia receives from her grandfather, Nikola Antnari, an offer to head a family bank, but resists this and asks Cattani to drop everything and run abroad with her. Cattani replies that this is impossible for him. He returns to the police service. The mafia decides to eliminate Commissioner Cattani, but Nicola Antinari intervenes for a while, knowing that his granddaughter is in love with the commissioner.
Nicola Antinari, enraged by the murder of Abbot Lovani and Anna organized by Terrazini and the mafia, and fearing for her granddaughter if Terrazini joins the bank’s administrative council, now decides to get rid of Terrazini. He instructs his assistant Tano Cariddi to negotiate with the head of the mafia clan, suggesting that Tano himself would now head the bank, representing the interests of the mafia, and in return asking to eliminate Terrazini. As a guarantee of the deal, Tano offers his life. The head of the mafia agrees. Immediately after the conclusion of the arms deal, Terrazini is killed. Julia, devastated by Cattani’s refusal, decides to accept her grandfather’s proposal to lead Antinari Bank. Her ideals are crumbling, she realizes that she will be involved in fraud and will turn dirty money, and accepts it.
Cattani, learning that a shipment of weapons is heading to the port , tracks down the vehicle in which the weapons are located. To his surprise, the car turns out to be nuclear material - enriched uranium , intended for a certain Arab country, in an amount sufficient to produce 3 atomic bombs ; cargo value - 1 trillion lire . They manage to load a car with uranium on a high-speed yacht before the police block the port. The pursuit of the sea begins. The coast guard , opening fire from a ship's machine gun, makes the yacht smuggle to a halt, but on the orders of Ifter, who was on board and accompanying the cargo, manages to drop the car with uranium from the deck into the sea. Ifter is being arrested. Nicola Antinari, learning about the exposure of her illegal operations, commits suicide.
The plot of the next series, Octopus 4 , reveals that Julia soon died in an accident in the organization of which Cattani suspected Tano Cariddi, although Cariddy himself absolutely denied this.
