Few biographical information about Liu Xie is preserved in the Liang dynasty chronicle . Liu Xie came from a modest family and did not receive wide fame during his lifetime. He was not married - perhaps because of Buddhist beliefs and / or financial insolvency. His famous treatise is believed to have been created in 501-2. (ep. Zhongxin of the Qi Dynasty, 479-502) in order to obtain literary fame and patronage at court. According to a historical joke, Liu changed into a street vendor and stopped the Shen Yue cart in order to hand him his work. Shen, a prominent writer of the era, paid attention to him and expressed his approval right on the spot. Liu Xie also received positive feedback from Xiao Tong蕭 統, the Crown Prince of the Liang Dynasty and compiler of the literary compendium Wen Xuan文選. However, this did not bring Liu Xie fame.
In later years, he edited Buddhist sutras and wrote treatises in a monastery in which, shortly before his death, he became a monk.
