Biography

Born July 11, 1919 in Chernigov in the family of an agronomist. The father died shortly after the birth of his son.

In 1925 he moved to permanent residence in Germany with his mother and stepfather.

He spent his childhood and youth in Berlin , where he received a secondary education and studied at the university’s medical faculty.

In 1937 he graduated from high school. Entered the medical faculty, which he graduated in 1941 .

In 1941 he entered the pastoral courses at the German Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad and subsequently graduated from them.

On December 6, 1942, he was ordained deacon , and on October 5, 1947, Metropolitan Seraphim (Lyade) , a priest and appointed abbot of the Nikolsky Church in the city of Constance . From 1942 to 1949, he was also the secretary of Metropolitan Seraphim (Lyade).

Since 1949, he served as a pastoral ministry in Melbourne , Australia .

In 1957, in the rank of archpriest, he was admitted to the Moscow Patriarchate and from that time until 1960 he was the rector of the church of St. Mary Magdalene in The Hague .

Since 1960 - abbot of Holy Cross Church in Munich.

In 1961, as part of the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate, he participated in the work of the 3rd Assembly of the World Council of Churches in New Delhi . On January 1, 1964, he was appointed Provost of the Parishes of the Central European Exarchate of the Moscow Patriarchate in the Federal Republic of Germany and throughout 1964 served as the head of the Resurrection Cathedral in West Berlin .

In the same year, he took part in the work of the II All-Christian Peace Congress in Prague and the IV Congress of the Conference of Churches ("Niborg-IV").

On January 23, 1966, in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Archimandrite Plato was tonsured a monk with the name Irenaeus , and on January 29 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite .

January 30, 1966 in the Refectory Church of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra is consecrated Bishop of Munich. March 3-8, 1967 participated in interviews between the theologians of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Evangelical Church of Germany (“Arnoldshain-III”); On August 7–9 of the same year, as a member of the Information Department of the World Council of Churches from the Moscow Patriarchate, he participated in meetings of the Department’s Working Committee held in Geneva and there from August 10 through 12 attended meetings of several committees for the preparation of the IV WCC Assembly. In the same year, from September 29 to October 5, he participated in the work of the next Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (“Nyborg-V”), held in Austria.

On February 24, 1971, he was appointed Bishop of the newly formed Baden Diocese (FRG) with the title of Baden and Bavarian.

On April 27 of the same year, he was included in the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church to the Assembly of the Cultural Center "Niborg-VI"; On September 30 - October 3, he participated in the work of the Fourth All-Christian Peace Congress in Prague, and from October 20 to October 28 he held regular theological discussions between representatives of the Evangelical Church of Germany and the Russian Orthodox Church (“Arnoldshain-V”).

September 9, 1972 elevated to the rank of archbishop .

In 1974, he was a member of the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate at the General Assembly "Nyborg-VII" in Engelberg ( Switzerland ) and participated in the meeting of the KMK Commission on anti-racism in Tanzania .

On March 13, 1975, he was appointed Archbishop of Vienna and Austria , temporarily managing the Baden and Bavarian diocese . In the same year he was included in the delegation of the Russian Church to the Fifth Assembly of the WCC in Nairobi (Kenya).

May 25-June 10, 1976 in the Federal Republic of Germany, as part of the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate, participated in the interviews of Arnoldshain-VII.

July 22-27, 1978 - attended the Fifth All-Christian Peace Congress in Prague.

October 18-25, 1979 was a member of the VIII General Assembly of CEC on the island of Crete in Greece

On April 14-16, 1983, he took part from the Russian Church in the meeting of the Presidium and the CEC Advisory Committee at Oxford .

3-7 October 1984 participated in the Third Ecumenical Meeting of CEC-SECE in Riva del Garda (Northern Italy).

On September 9, 1986, he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan in connection with the 20th anniversary of the episcopal ministry.

Since 1991, he reigned in the Munich Holy Cross Church.

December 22, 1992, was released from the interim administration of the Diocese of Baden due to its abolition.

In 1994, he was arrested in Germany along with American Colonel George Trofimov on suspicion of espionage, but was soon released. According to Oleg Kalugin , Iriney collaborated with the KGB and had an agent-alias Ikar.

He died on July 26, 1999 in Munich after a long illness.
