History

People very long ago began to live where the village now stands - next to the place where the Yuutuanjoki breaking into dozens of channels, flows into Lake Inari . Occupying an advantageous geographical position, the village gradually became the center of local trade. In 1876 , when the Inari community was founded, the village became the administrative center of the community.

Inari is a locality in which three cultures simultaneously develop - Finnish, North Saami and Inari Saami.

Institutions and Attractions

Finland’s Sámi Parliament is located in Inari, Finland ’s elected representative body for cultural self-government.

Due to its location, Inari is an important tourist center, a large number of tourist buses stop here, including buses to or from Norway .

Siarida Exhibition Center is also located in Inari, within the framework of which the Sami Museum, founded in 1959 , and the Natural Center of Upper Lapland are operating - one of the ten natural centers of the Forest Service of Finland [1] . Another of Inari's attractions is the church, built in 1951. Inari also houses the hostel of Yeer for students of the Education Center of the Sami region .

Next to the Siid Exhibition Center is the Sámi Sámi Cultural Center , opened in 2012 , which is the administrative and cultural center of the Sámi in Finland. The Sami Parliament of Finland and many other Sami institutions and organizations work here. The conference hall and meeting rooms equipped with the latest technology are designed for 430 people. [2] [3] . The center is located on the banks of the River , which flows into Lake Inari . It is a three-story building, the exterior decoration of which is made using wood and glass [4] . Solemn events associated with the opening of Sayos were held on April 3, 2012, and President of Finland Sauli Niinistö participated in them [5] .

Inari is a popular visiting place for German tourists - this is due to the fact that in the popular German film of 1998 Zugvögel ... Einmal nach Inari it was Inari who was the purpose of the journey to which this film is dedicated.

Since 1999, at the end of January, annually, the Skábmagovat Indigenous Film Festival (“Pictures of the Polar Night”) has been held in Inari, where films and television productions of the Sami and other indigenous peoples of the world are presented. The festival venues are the Siida Museum and the Saios Cultural Center. The “trademark” of the festival is the open-air cinema “Northern Lights”, which is built entirely from snow. In 2017, the film festival will be held January 26-29. [6] [7] .
