The western island is larger than the other two, but still it is only about 3 km in length. Individual islands do not have separate names on the maps and, therefore, they are usually called a group. The sea surrounding these islands is covered with ice with some wormwood throughout the winter. Quite a lot of ice in the surrounding area, even in the summer.
The Scott Hansen Islands are part of the Great Arctic Reserve , the largest reserve in Russia, more precisely its section of the "Islands of the Kara Sea."
The islands were named after Sigurd Scott-Hansen , a Norwegian navy lieutenant. He was responsible for astronomical and meteorological observations during the polar expedition of Fridtjof Nansen in 1893 to Fram . On most maps, these islands are called Scott Hansen Islands . This is due to the peculiarities of Russian spelling.
