Biography

Peter Chaplin was born in a military family, in 1718 entered the naval service with a midshipman . In 1724 he graduated from the Naval Academy, after which on January 24, 1725 Chaplin went on a Kamchatka expedition . As part of the detachment, Alexei Chirikov’s detachment made a latitudinal intersection of Siberia to determine the latitudinal extent of Eurasia .

Later, Chaplin took part in discoveries and topographical works during the voyages of 1728 and 1729 on the boat "St. Gabriel", whose captain was Bering. Together with Chirikov, Chaplin led the “Journal of the Kamchatka Expedition” (partially published in 1823 ), which allowed to recreate its history. In 1728, Chaplin was promoted to warrant officer “for his labors in the Siberian expedition”.

Returning from the expedition in 1730 , Chaplin, together with Bering and Chirikov, compiled a final voyage map, which significantly exceeded previous maps in the accuracy of the outlines of the North-East Asia and later became the basis for the image of this part of the mainland on all Western European maps.

In the same year, Chaplin was promoted to non-commissioned lieutenant. Since 1732, he commanded various ships and units of frigates of the Baltic Fleet and was almost in constant sailing. In 1751, Chaplin was awarded the rank of captain of the third rank , in 1756 - the second rank and in 1758 - the first rank . During this period of time, commanding various ships, he made several voyages, mainly in the waters of the Baltic and German seas . In 1760-1762 he served as captain of the Revel port.

On December 21, 1762 , due to old age and illness, Chaplin was appointed captain of the Arkhangelsk port. In October of the following year he was promoted to captain-commander , and on August 29, 1765 he died at the duty station, in the city of Arkhangelsk .
