History
Opened on October 1, 1868 by the works of the archbishop of Don Plato (Gorodetsky) . It was located in the cathedral city of the Don Diocese - Novocherkassk . In 1883, it was transferred to a beautiful two-story building designed by A. Yashchenko on Platovsky Prospekt (in Soviet times, the educational building of the Novocherkassk School of Communications , ceased to exist in 2011). In the same 1883, the seminary (house) church in the name of John the Theologian was consecrated.
In 1885, the rector M.V.Simashkevich opened an icon painting class at the seminary, and three years later he opened the John the Theological Society at the seminary. Under him, the Russian Emperor first visited the Don Theological Seminary. On May 7, 1887, the seminary received Emperor Alexander III with his family. It is interesting that Archpriest Simashkevich managed the Don Theological Seminary for more than 20 years and on November 25, 1905, already in the rank of archimandrite , he was appointed bishop of Cheboksary , that is, the second vicar of the Kazan diocese , and in 1907 - bishop of Penza and Saransky. It is also noteworthy that on January 10, 1915, His Eminence Mitrofan (Simashkevich) was returned to the Don as the head of the Don Diocese and led it during the First World War , the October Revolution and the Civil War . After the October Revolution, the new government headed for the elimination of spiritual education. In 1918, classes at the seminary ceased. During the Civil War, the Red Guards staged an ap. John the Theologian barracks, and in the building of the Novocherkassk Theological School since 1920 housed a children's labor colony. In 1920, the seminary was forced to be transformed into pastoral courses, and in 1921 it was finally closed.
By January 1947, Bishop Seraphim (Sharapov) had prepared everything necessary for the opening of a theological seminary in Rostov-on-Don and asked the Patriarch to ask for permission to open it. However, in October 1947, the Council of Ministers of the USSR refused permission.
On October 6, 2010, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Rostov Missionary Theological School was transformed into the Don Theological Seminary. On November 23 of the same year in Rostov-on-Don the grand opening of the revived seminary took place, which was located in the educational building on the courtyard of the St. Seraphim Church, on Portovaya Street in Rostov-on-Don.
