About the Museum
A two-story building of the 30-40s was converted into a museum [to clarify ] , it previously housed the Volgolag administration. The project was developed based on Russian and foreign experience in creating industry and corporate museum exhibits, taking into account the latest trends in museum exhibits. When equipping the museum, modern technologies were used, in particular, sound exhibits, special computer programs and guided layouts.
In 11 halls there is an exposition telling about the history of the development of hydropower in the USSR and Russia, outstanding people in the profession, generation and transmission of electricity, construction and installation of hydroelectric power stations, as well as hydro resources of the earth. There are no analogues of the museum in any country in the world , its uniqueness was confirmed by world leading hydropower specialists, members of the international commission on large dams, who visited the museum in 2007 .
In 2011, the Information Center-Museum of Hydropower became a Diploma Winner of the National Tourism Prize named after Yu. Senkevich in the nomination “The Best Regional Museum”.
Museum Exposition
A visit to the museum begins with a hall that is dedicated to the history, current status and development prospects of the Russian energy sector in general and hydropower in particular. The exposition of the hall covers a huge content and is the most representative. This room is an image [ unknown term ] and summarizes the information presented in the museum.
The memory hall tells about whose forces the Uglich and Rybinsk hydropower plants were built. Here is a model of the Soviet camp, a map of the USSR with ITL, rations of prisoners, their clothes. From the old radio, the memories of the prisoners of Volgolag are heard.
The exposition of the Cascade Development Hall tells about cascade development and types of hydroelectric power stations.
The hall of hydraulic structures provides information on equipment manufacturing plants - LMZ, Electrosila and others. Here, models of dams, types of hydroelectric power plants, various models are stored in glass display cases, including operating ones, for example, a crane of the Saratov hydroelectric station, a sectional hydrogenerator.
The information in the world hydropower hall is divided into parts according to parts of the world and continents. You can get acquainted with the "most" powerful hydropower plants, high dams, large reservoirs, with the largest companies in the hydropower industry.
In the lobby of the second floor there is a recreation area, as well as technical equipment for using the "virtual museum" program. It will allow you to wander through the halls of any of the branches of the Information Center and, thus, get an idea of all the hydropower facilities of interest.
Electricity consumers are everywhere. It is produced in relatively few places close to sources of fuel and water resources. Therefore, the need arises for the transmission of electricity over distances reaching sometimes hundreds of kilometers. You can find out how this happens in the hall - energy transfer and consumption.
The exhibition “The Importance of Hydropower” is dedicated to the benefits of renewable energy. Treasures are hidden in the chests - the wealth of ecologically clean energy of water. A reference and information system is presented that tells about the water resources of Russia, large reservoirs and their significance, ecology.
In the cascade hall of the Verkhnevolzhsky hydroelectric power station, a characteristic of technical solutions during the construction of the Uglich and Rybinsk hydroelectric stations is given. It was here, on the Upper Volga, that the idea of creating large reservoirs was realized. The principles underlying the construction of the cascade became classical and were applied in the construction of not only all the Big Volga hydropower facilities, but also on other lowland rivers.
The scale of the equipment of the hydroelectric power station is presented by the open air exposition.
On the basis of the information center, interactive programs are conducted for students of various age groups.
