History
In the modern Russian church, the rector of the church has the rank of archpriest (if he is the face of the white clergy ) or priest . According to paragraphs. 18 and 19 of Chapter XI of the ROC Charter (from 2000 ), “at the head of each parish is the rector of the church, appointed by the diocesan bishop for the spiritual guidance of believers and the administration of clergy and parish. In his activity, the abbot is accountable to the diocesan bishop. The abbot is called to bear responsibility for the proper performance of divine services, consistent with the Church Charter, for church preaching, religious and moral condition, and appropriate education of members of the parish. He must conscientiously carry out all liturgical, pastoral and administrative duties determined by his position, in accordance with the provisions of the canons and this Charter. ” [1]
The rector of the monastery in the modern Russian Orthodox Church is the diocesan bishop in the case of diocesan monasteries or the Patriarch in the case of stauropegial monasteries [2] . The abbots of the cloisters, in which the diocesan bishops are holy archimandrites, are called governors. The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia is the holy archimandrite of all the male monasteries of the city of Moscow, as well as stauropegic male monasteries in the territory of other dioceses [3] . The abbess of the convent is the abbess. Through the abbess in the stavropegic monasteries, the Patriarch leads the monastery [3] .
During the synodal period in Russia , according to the states of 1764 , the abbot was rector of a third-grade monastery. His superior rights and official duties were the same as any abbot of the monastery had. Its difference from the archimandrite (rector of the monastery of first-class and second-class) was that during worship he put on a simple monastic robe and a plait , while the archimandrite wears a mantle with tablets , a pectoral cross , a club and a miter .
In Catholic churches, the abbot - abbot - rector of the monastery.
