The name translated from Finnish means “Gulf of Estonia ”.
Geography
Located in the northern part of the Gulf of Finland . The entrance to the bay is located between the Reposari Peninsula and the Bolshoi Pogranichny Island. The bay is open to the south, protruding into the mainland for 10 km. The width of the entrance is about 2.2 km. Depth up to 16 m.
The rivers Kharmianoya , Virojoki , Pajusarenoya and others flow into the gulf . There are many islands in the gulf: Pitali, Korpisari, Khuvisari, Kaita, Pyutersari, Turinluoto, Leppisari, Varpusaari, Vanha, Yamsia, Pihlayuluoto, Karhusari, Korkisaari, Zhelezototovsky, Perkyasuolikov, Perkyuokol, Perjos Nurmiluoto, Cormusari, Myantyuluoto, Bulat, Hoikkasari, Katayaluoto, Sumari, Leppyaluoto, Halsholm, Kusiluoto, Dangerous, Kellosari, Ryantie, Tuuholma, Koyluoto , Paukkaluoto, Heynaluoto and others [1] . In the center of the bay is the bank of Moses. Standart [2] [3] raid is located at the exit from the bay.
The villages of Virolahti and Virojoki and several smaller settlements are located on the Finnish coast of the bay. The Russian coast of the bay is not populated.
The shores are swampy in places; covered with coniferous vegetation. The coast is indented, many bays and bays, the largest of which are Bulatnaya and Mustalahti. The height of the coast is up to 50 m.
The water area of the gulf belongs mainly to the Virolahti community of the Kymenlaakso province of Finland, and to a lesser extent to the Vyborg district of the Leningrad region of Russia.
