Biography

Anna Alexandrovna Bichurina was born in 1853 (in a number of sources in 1854 [1] ) in Tiflis.

She was brought up in the Transcaucasian girl’s institute, where she was regent of the choir, studied singing at the Tiflis School of the Caucasian Musical Society, and then at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under the direction of Henrietta Nissen-Salaman , and later with Professor Giovanni Corsi [2] . Since 1871, she began performing in concerts [1] .

Bichurina’s theatrical debut took place on December 8, 1875 in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theater in the opera “ Life for the Tsar ” by M. Glinka in the role of Vanya (later becoming the crown role of her repertoire) [2] [3] .

Moreover, according to Polovtsev’s dictionary, Anna Bichurina was naturally endowed with a hot southern temperament; thanks to this, the vocal and dramatic side of the performance of the role for Bichurina stood at the same height, merging into complete harmony and leaving an impression of artistic completeness [3] . P. Tchaikovsky , N. Rimsky-Korsakov , Ts.Kui [1] highly praised Bichurina’s vocal data.

Sang under the direction of E. Napravnik , partners were B. Korsov , M. Koryakin , A. Menshikova , O. Palechek , V. Raab , E. Pavlovskaya , F. Stravinsky [1] .

She has toured throughout Russia and abroad, in the concert repertoire, solo parts of the 9th symphony and Beethoven ’s Solemn Mass were performed , Georgian songs were edited by M. Ippolitov-Ivanov [1] .

A. Borodin dedicated to her his novel “Haste”, and A. Rubinstein - “Prince Rostislav on a strange land” [1] .

In November 1886, Anna Bichurina left the theater stage, saying goodbye to the public in the role of Uberta [3] .

Anna Alexandrovna Bichurina died on February 5, 1888 at the age of 36 and was buried in St. Petersburg at the Novodevichy Cemetery [4] .
