Tindouf ( Berber : Tinduf , Arabic. تيندوف ) is a city in the south-west of Algeria , the administrative center of the homonymous province .

History

Oasis of Tindouf, 1880

The city of Tindouf was built by the Tajakant tribe next to an isolated oasis in 1852. In 1895, he was defeated by the Sograv tribe of Rebib, while the Tajik tribe was expelled from the region. The city remained in ruins until 1934, when French troops arrived here.

After Algeria gained independence in 1962, the city is actively built up and growing. The region is of strategic importance; Algerian military bases are located here.

In the vicinity of the city there are four refugee camps from Western Sahara , in which more than 170 thousand people live ^[1] .

Geography

Tindouf is located near the Moorish and Moroccan borders, about 720 km southwest of Bechar , 770 km west of Adrar , 1475 km northwest of Tamanrasset and 1460 km southwest of the country's capital city Algeria

Population

The population of Tindouf according to 2008 is 45 966 people ^[2] ; according to 1998, it numbered 25,266 people ^[3] . The literacy rate of the population is 75.0% (79.7% among men and 70.1% among women) ^[4] .

Transport

7 km north-west of the city is Tindouf Airport, which serves regular flights to the capital, Algeria , as well as some other local and international flights ^[5] . Tindouf is connected by road to Bechar.
