Two - time champion of the Latvian SSR 1944 [1] and 1950 [2] Bronze medalist of the championship of the Latvian SSR in 1947. Champion of Latvia among schoolchildren in 1927 [3]
In the national team of Latvia, a participant in two chess Olympiads . In 1936, at the unofficial Olympiad in Munich, he played on the 6th board (+4 −5 = 1) [4] . In 1937, he played on 3 boards in Stockholm (+2 −6 = 7) [5] . In 1938 he headed the student team of Latvia.
According to the memoirs of A. N. Koblenz , Mezhgailis was a "chess player of a fine positional style." [3]
During the war he fought in the ranks of the 43rd Guards Rifle Latvian Division , was an officer artilleryman. After the war, he worked as a teacher at the Latvian Agricultural Academy in Jelgava . Later he headed the laboratory at one of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR . [3]
