Location
Spasskaya and Arkhangelsk churches are located in the historical center of the city in a place where in ancient times there was a wooden city Kremlin , within which there were wooden churches. By the time of the construction of brick churches, the city center had already shifted to the east and was located in the vicinity of Trinity Cathedral . The peculiarity of the city’s relief is that it was located on a slope descending to the Usolka River , so even the city Kremlin was not on a hill, but on a slope, but between two ravines, cut through this hill. Currently, these ravines are smoothed out and hardly noticeable. During the construction, these churches apparently played a significant role in the appearance of the city, but at present their overview is very difficult for modern buildings.
History
The wooden fortifications and the temples that stood here were destroyed by fire in 1672. At this time, the city was experiencing a period of economic growth, so brick temples were erected on the site of the burned city. The first in the years 1689-1691 was the summer Spassky Church. The warm church of Michael the Archangel is located in close proximity to it on the site of the church burned down in 1712. The temple was consecrated in 1725. In 1733, a common bell tower was built for two churches, which was not preserved. In 1768, the chapel was consecrated in the name of Simeon the Stylite. The original architecture of the temple is greatly distorted by subsequent reconstructions.
