Location

Spasskaya and Arkhangelsk churches are located in the historical center of the city in a place where in ancient times there was a wooden city Kremlin, within which there were wooden churches. By the time of the construction of brick churches, the city center had already shifted to the east and was located in the vicinity of Trinity Cathedral . The peculiarity of the city’s relief is that it was located on a slope descending to the Usolka River , so even the city Kremlin was not on a hill, but on a slope, but between two ravines, cut through this hill. Currently, these ravines are smoothed out and hardly noticeable. During the construction, these churches apparently played a significant role in the appearance of the city, but at present their overview is very difficult for modern buildings.

History

Church of the Savior before restoration, 2003

The wooden fortifications and the temples that stood here were destroyed by fire in 1672. At this time, the city was experiencing a period of economic growth, so brick temples were erected on the site of the burned city. The first Spassky church was built in 1689-1691, its construction was carried out simultaneously with the Trinity Cathedral and the Epiphany Church .

In 1761, the iconostasis was updated, the icons for it were made by local craftsmen - the peasant Polycarp Golovin and the headman of this church Peter Petelin. Until 1850, the heads were covered with a wooden share, which was replaced by gilded iron.

In this church, before the 1917 revolution, priest Gregory Garyaev and deacon Alexander Ipatov , who were killed in September 1918, served in the Russian Orthodox Church glorified them as holy martyrs in 2000. In the early 1930s, the church was closed, it housed the DOSAAF committee. At present, the Spassky Church is a parish church; divine services are resumed there.

Architecture

The church had two chapels - John the Theologian and Simeon the Pillar. The five - headed two - pillar quadruple of the temple is elongated in the transverse direction, which gives it some weight and heaviness. The temple does not have a refectory ; the altar part consists of three semicircular absids . The temple has two tiers of windows, is covered with a box vault and has a four-sloped roof. Five small onion-shaped heads stand on deaf drums .

The quadrangle of the temple has wide shoulder blades in the corners. False curtains are located under the roof overhangs, three in the narrow northern and southern walls, and four in the eastern and western ones. The zakomaras were painted, the murals were partially preserved. Patterned window trims of windows stand out on a flat surface of the walls. The altar section looks too wide due to the proportions of the temple. The windows of the altar are also decorated with beautiful platbands. The peculiarity of the design of the altar is massive curly half-columns that separate the three altar parts. Some association with the columns of the porch of the Trinity Church, which was being built simultaneously, begs.
