History

Built by Tsar Fedor Alekseevich in 1681 over the northern side chapel of the Verkhospassky Cathedral . According to Ivan Snegirev , it is built from the chapel of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich [1] . This explains its small size - length about 7 m, width 4 m. The church has a closed arch , the floor is laid with slabs of black and white marble .

The passage to the church was initially carried out by a stone spiral staircase, at present it can only be reached through the choirs of the Church of the Resurrection of the Word. From the altar of the church there is a passage to the roof of the Faceted Chamber . The Church of the Cross Exaltation belongs to the central one of the heads of the church towers.

After the October Revolution, the church was closed. The Holy Cross Exaltation Church, like the rest of the church towers, as part of the Grand Kremlin Palace is part of the Residence of the President of Russia [2] . Services in the church are not performed.

Interior

The decoration of the church was least affected by alterations and was not damaged in any of the Kremlin fires. It has a baroque hue, which is explained by the participation in the work on it of Western masters who worked in the Kremlin. The wooden doors of the church were created in the 16th century and were transferred from the church in Trinity-Golenishchev .

The church has a four-tiered copper hammered iconostasis , created according to a drawing by Karp Zolotarev . It was restored in 1781 without any changes. Icons for the iconostasis were made in the "tufted" technique by the tsarist isographer Vasily Poznansky . They are made in a combination of painting on satin silk (faces, hands) and appliqués made of textile and gilded paper (other details of the image). Isograph used Flemish engravings as samples. According to legend, the Russian princesses embroidered the icons with small pearls .

According to the sketches of Karp Zolotaryov, mica cases were also made, which contain icons painted by Ivan Saltanov and Ivan Bezmin with scenes of the Last Judgment and the Passion of the Lord . At the altar of the church was the icon “Worshiping the Cross” painted on canvas by Bogdan Saltanov, depicting Emperor Konstantin , Tsarina Elena , Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich , Tsarina Maria Ilyinichna and Patriarch Nikon [3] .

In the church there is a crucifix made to the best of the Cross of the Lord . It was created in 1687 by the carver of the Novospassky monastery, the old man Ippolit. From him, the church received its second common name - Raspyatskaya .
