Chants about rain - a thematic variety of children's play, originally - spell songs of pagan origin, addressed to the rain. There are a large number of various options for calling - both to increase rain and to stop it. Similar names are found in many cultures, including Ancient Greece . The English version of the cry, “Rain Rain Go Away,” is included in the Road Folk Songs Index , numbered 19096.

The record of the English rain cry dates back to at least the 17th century, when James Howell wrote in his proverbial collection: Raine raine goe to Spain: faire weather come againe (Rain down to Spain go away: return the wonderful weather to us) [2] .
A version very close to the modern version was noted by John Aubrey in 1687 as being used by "small children": "Rain raine goe away, come again a Saturday" (Rain, rain, leave, come on Saturday) [2] .
A wide variety of alternative endings were recorded, including: “Midsummer,” “Laundry Day,” “Christmas,” and “Martha's Wedding” [2] .
In the mid-19th century, James Orchard Halliwell recorded and published a version:
