Story
Part One: Who I Am, What I Will Become
25-year-old billionaire Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham City . He spent 12 years abroad, preparing himself to fight crime, which he promised to devote his life to after he witnessed the murder of his parents in childhood. At the same time, Lieutenant James Gordon joined the Gotham Police Department. The incorruptible Gordon quickly sets himself up against corrupt colleagues, including his partner Detective Arnold Flass and Commissioner Gillian Loeb .
Disguised Bruce Wayne during a night intelligence mission in the East End meets a young prostitute Holly Robinson . Entering into a fight with her pimp , he is attacked by several prostitutes, including Domina Selina Kyle . Bruce was detained by two police officers, but, despite serious injuries, he manages to escape. Returning to the Wayne estate, he sits in a chair in front of his father's bust and reflects on the inefficiency of his methods of dealing with criminals. After breaking the glass, a bat flies into the room and sits on the statue. In it, Bruce finds a source of inspiration and decides to create an image that can inspire fear in his enemies.
Part Two: War declared
April 4, Lieutenant Gordon goes on a hostage call. Having successfully released him, he trains in a shooting range, reflecting on how he hates weapons and his work. On April 9, Jim was called to the police department for a meeting on the appearance of a masked crime fighter - Batman. Meanwhile, Batman stops the gang of thieves, arguing that the costume works - but his technique is still not perfect.
May 15, another meeting at the police station on the Batman issue. The witness of his attack, Flass, tells his version of events, although the figure shows the true version. He is ridiculed. On May 19, Batman bursts into the dinner party of Gotham crime, and declares that their undivided power over the city is coming to an end. The next day, Commissioner Loeb chastises Gordon for his lack of success in the Batman case. On June 2, another attempt is made to catch Batman by setting an ambush - having played a robbery. On June 5, Batman links Carmine Falcone and throws his Rolls Royce into the river. The next day, Jim Gordon comes to Harvey Dent , and declares that he is on the list of suspects for the role of Batman. However, he only works with Dent, at that very moment hiding behind his window. On the way back to the station, Gordon and his assistant collide with Batman. Police drive Batman into an empty building nearby, injuring him in the leg. Batman is trying to go out onto the roof, but a riot police helicopter arrives on time and drops a bomb on the building by order of Commissioner Loeb.
Part Three: The Black Dawn
Batman falls from the collapsed stairs. The fire ignites a termite in his belt, and he throws it away, since he still has a pair of devices in a raincoat, gloves and boots. Meanwhile, Celina Kyle, who lives nearby, wakes up and sees Holly at the window watching the explosion. Police special forces are preparing to storm the building, partially collapsed after the explosion. They find a hatch from the basement with an open lock, in which Batman is supposedly hiding. However, this turns out to be a trap, Batman jumps out of the chimney and closes part of the special forces, and part neutralizes them on the spot. It turned out that besides Batman only the Siamese cat survived. Hiding under the remains of the stairs with the cat, he bandages his wounds, planning an escape.
When the special forces burst in, the cat jumps out of the shadows, diverting some of the attention to itself. Meanwhile, Batman includes an ultrasound device in his boot, calling all the bats from his cave to the building. However, he needs to win more time. Trying to knock out a couple of special forces from the wind tube, he causes fire on himself. Together with the cat, they run under a hail of bullets. Throwing the cat out the window, Batman gets another wound - in the arm. The cat, meanwhile, finds its way into the hands of Celine, who, along with Holly, is standing in a crowd of onlookers. Batman unleashes a column on special forces, punches one of them with a wall - by shooting at a cat - and then bats fly in, under the cover of which he manages to escape.
Four days later, Lieutenant Gordon, along with his assistant, discuss the incident and the fact that Bruce Wayne is suitable for the role of Batman, but he has Alibi, and he is generally abroad. The lieutenant realizes that he is beginning to feel something for his assistant and is trying to fight it. Meanwhile, Bruce is skiing on the side of the mountain, thinking that he needs help. He needs to lure Gordon to his side. On June 19, Selina leaves Holly with Holly. And Jim Gordon kisses with his assistant. On August 7, Selina first puts on the Catwoman costume. And Gordon sits on the edge of the bed where his wife is sleeping, and talks about life, his actions, Batman and the severity of the gun in his hands.
Part Four: A Friend in Need
September has come. The novel of Lieutenant Gordon with his assistant Sarah is in full swing. Meanwhile, police detained Jefferson Skivers, a well-known drug dealer, but was forced to release him on bail by a judge. However, Batman gets to him, and threatening him with torture, forces him to put incriminating evidence on Sergeant Flass. The Commissioner, unhappy about this, is blackmailing Gordon with photos of Sarah, saying that he will show these photos to his wife if he does not hinder the case of Flass.
September 25, Gordon with his wife Barbara arrives at the Wayne estate to finally check whether he is Batman. Bruce plays the role of a playboy, sitting in a dressing gown with a girl whose language he does not know, drinking champagne in the morning. And he has an iron alibi for each of the occurrences of Batman. However, Gordon’s wife says that no matter who wore Batman’s mask, he must very skillfully keep his secrets. At this point, Jim decides to tell his wife the truth about his betrayal, after which he calmly begins an investigation against Flass. However, Skiivers is poisoned and he goes to the hospital, after which the case temporarily moves aside. Gordon's wife gives birth to a boy.
Batman hopes to eavesdrop on Falcone's conversation with his nephew that someone needs to be silenced on the night of November 2nd. However, suddenly Catwoman intervenes, striking Falcone's claws. Batman has to intervene so that she is not shot. The next day, however, Falcone orders his nephew to abduct Gordon's wife and child by luring him out of the house. However, Bruce Wayne intervenes in the matter (who cannot remain aloof, but unable to dress like Batman), and everything goes well. All are saved.
As an epilogue, they show recognition of Flass, who decided to pull everyone along (and he had some incriminating evidence). And Commissioner Loeb and even the mayor were involved. Gordon was promoted to captain, he began to work with Batman. In the end, Gordon reports the appearance of the Joker in the city - in fact, Batman's first and most important enemy.

Impact on other adaptations
Batman: The Phantasm Mask
The creators of the animated film " Batman: The Fantasy Mask " Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett based on some aspects of Batman: Year One in working on flash scenes:
- A fight between a young and inexperienced Bruce Wayne with street gangsters in which he reveals his weaknesses.
- The scene in which Batman is trapped by the SWAT team is similar to the episode from the graphic novel (shelling of an abandoned house in the third issue).
Batman: The Beginning and The Dark Knight
The plot of the movie " Batman: The Beginning " and its sequel "The Dark Knight " directly adapts several elements from Miller's graphic novel:
- Most characters, such as Commissioner Loeb, Detective Flass, and Carmine Falcone, are in the movie Batman: The Beginning.
- The scene with Bruce Wayne, who returned after many years of training abroad, aboard the plane refers to the first page of the comic book.
- Christian Bale 's Street Outfit mimics the clothes in which Bruce strolled down the Lower East End in the first issue of Year One .
- Closer to the film’s finale, Batman uses an ultrasonic transmitter, the signal of which bats flies from the cave. A similar scene is present in the third issue.
- The final scene of Batman’s conversation with Gordon on the roof of the police building refers to the last frames of a graphic novel. Both in the comic book and in the film, Gordon reports the arrival of a new threat, which the Joker turns out to be.
- The scene in The Dark Knight, in which Two-Face threatens Gordon’s family with weapons, has a counterpart in the fourth issue of Year One : Falcone’s men hold Barbara Gordon and their son hostage on the bridge.
