It grows in South America in the Andes , north of Chile and west of Argentina at altitudes of 3200–4500 meters above sea level. The life form of plants of this species is a pillow plant . The growth rate is a maximum of 2 centimeters per year. Leaves are covered with wax. It burns well. Protected by law in four countries.
