Historical Review

EnMF Education

The Power Engineering Faculty within the MPEI was established on September 10, 1943: on this day, in accordance with the decision of the USSR State Defense Committee, the Director of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute V. A. Golubtsova signed Order No. 407 on the establishment of the Power Engineering Faculty [1] [2] . At that time, for the speedy rise of Soviet energy , which suffered heavy damage during the fighting, the rapid development of power engineering was required, but it lacked qualified personnel; however, in the most severe time for the country, the government showed concern for the preservation and development of domestic education, science and industry. The new faculty was created on the basis of the Thermotechnical Faculty of MPEI (in 1946 it was renamed the Thermal Power Faculty [3] ) [4] [5] .

The initiators of the creation of the Faculty of Power Engineering were prominent mechanical scientists A.V. Shcheglyaev and L.K. Ramzin . In the first years of the faculty's existence, he provided students with training in two specialties: Boiler-Building and Turbine-Building [6] [7] . The first dean of EnMF was A. V. Shcheglyaev, and his assistant was associate professor V. A. Kirillin , future academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences [8] . At the time of the formation of the faculty, there were 150 students in his 1st year, 50 in his 2nd, and 40 in his 3rd [1] .

Since the formation of EnMF, the numbering of the student study groups of the faculty has been established: С- n - yy , where the initial letter “C” denotes the faculty (institute) as part of the MPEI, in this case, Energomashino С troitelny; n is the number encoding the specialty in which the students of the group are studying, and yy are the last two digits of the year they entered MPEI [9] .

First graduate departments

The specialty “Boiler Building” was created by Professor L.K. Ramzin, who headed the newly formed Department of Boiler Building (its backbone was part of the staff of the Department of Boiler Installations that existed at the former Heat Engineering Department). The department trained students in the specialty "Boiler Building", later - in the specialty "Boiler and Reactor Engineering". In 1962, the department was renamed the Department of Steam Generation (ASG) [10] .

The second specializing department at EnMF was the Department of Heat Engines , founded in 1930 as the department of Steam Turbine Installations (the first head was Professor G. S. Zhiritsky , who headed the department until his unjustified arrest in 1937 [11] ) and was part of the structure until 1943 Thermotechnical faculty. From 1938 until his death in 1970, the department was headed by A.V. Shcheglyaev. The new name of the department, received in 1943, was associated with the introduction of additional specialization in gas turbines for its students. In 1950, it was once again renamed and became known as the Department of Steam and Gas Turbines [12] .

General technical departments

In addition to the two graduate departments, the faculty also included the departments of Theoretical Mechanics, Material Resistance, Descriptive Geometry and Drawing, Machine Parts, Metal Technology, and Theory of Machines when creating the faculty.

The Department of Theoretical Mechanics was created simultaneously with the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1930 (its first head in 1930–1933 was Professor N. N. Buchholz , and in 1940 the department was headed and headed by another prominent Soviet mechanical scientist - Professor M G. Slobodiansky ) [13] [14] .

In the same year, the Department of Resistance of Materials was also formed (professors successively headed it: in 1930-1932 - E.N. Tikhomirov, in 1932-1934 - S.P. Nikitin, in 1938-1958 - С . S. Kryukovsky) [15] .

Simultaneously with the founding of MPEI, the Department of Descriptive Geometry and Drawing was created. From 1930 until its death in 1962, it was headed by Professor E. A. Glazunov [16] [17] .

In 1931, the Department of Machine Parts was founded at MPEI (the head until 1951 was Professor S.K. Ruzhentsev ). In 1938, the Department of Theory of Machines and Mechanisms was allocated from its composition, which was headed by Professor S. I. Artobolevsky [18] .

Department of Metal Technology was established in 1936. At the time of the formation of EnMF, it was headed by Professor A. S. Ognevetsky [19] .

EnMF Development in the 20th Century

After the death in 1948 of L.K. Ramzin, the ASG department was successively headed by: associate professor V.N. Timofeev (1949-1952), professors A.P. Kovalev (1952-1976), V.A. Dvoinishnikov (1976 —2005), P.V. Roslyakov (since 2005). The department gradually formed two main areas of scientific research. One of them is associated with the development and optimization of steam boiler designs from the standpoint of the most rational combustion of fuel and reliable operation of heating surfaces; the second focuses on the creation of environmentally friendly technologies for burning fuel in power plants and, in particular, improving the environmental performance of thermal power plants [20] [21] .

The following areas of scientific research were created at the Department of PGT, headed by Professor A. V. Shcheglyaev (since 1953, a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences ): gas dynamics of turbomachines; automatic regulation of turbine units; durability, vibration and reliability of turbomachines; non-stationary gas dynamics. These directions were headed by professors M. E. Deich , S. G. Smelnitsky, A. G. Kostyuk and G. S. Samoilovich. In 1950, the Problem Laboratory of Turbomachines was created at the department and has been constantly developing since then [22] [23] . A unique feature of the educational process and scientific work at the EnMF was the widespread use of the educational experimental CHPP MPEI (the construction of this CHPP with a capacity of 12 thousand kW was completed in 1951; laboratories of a number of Energomash departments were also located on its territory in the courtyard of house No. 17 on Krasnokazarmennaya Street [ 8] ). A.V.Scheglyaev, N.I. Timoshenko, A.G. Kostyuk, B.M. Troyanovsky, A.P. Kovalev and others (the rotor of a steam turbine that has served at the MPEI MPEI for 60 years in the summer of 2015 was installed on the site in front of the main building of MPEI [24] ). After the death in 1970 of A.V. Shcheglyaev, the faculty of PGT was successively headed by professors A.G. Kostyuk (1970-1987) and A.D. Trukhny (1987-2002) [12] .

In 1951, the Department of Machine Parts and Theory of Machines and Mechanisms were combined into a single department of Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts (head - S. I. Artobolevsky) [18] . However, in 1957, S. I. Artobolevsky left MPEI [25] , and the department, which in 1959 received a new name: the Department of Fundamentals of Machine Design (OKM), was headed by Professor N. A. Kovalev, who led it until 1977. Later, the department was headed by: associate professor V.I. Ershov (1977-1980), professor V.N. Moskalenko (1980-1984), associate professor D.A. Peremyshev (1984-1988), professor V. P Nikolaev (1988-2003), associate professor D. D. Korzh (2003-2006), A. I. Smirnov (since 2006). Employees of the department were engaged in the design of machine parts and lifting mechanisms , the study of dynamic processes in gears and flexible gears , and the development of methods for designing structures made of composite materials ; computer-aided design systems [26] [27] were introduced into the educational process.

The Department of Descriptive Geometry and Drawing in the 1960s was transferred to the Faculty of Electrical Equipment and Automation of Industry and Transport (EAAFT); in 1999-2001 she was a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineering MPEI (IET), and in May 2001 she returned to Energomash [28] [29] . In the second half of the 20th century, the department (renamed after transferring to EAPTF first to the Department of Technical Graphics, and then to the Department of Engineering Graphics [17] ) prepared fundamental textbooks and problem books on courses in descriptive geometry and mechanical engineering drawing . At the same time, work was launched to introduce modern mathematical methods into the engineering graphics course, and later to reorient the course towards the use of computer graphics and modern design and drawing systems such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks [30] .

In the second half of the XX century, the number of graduating departments in Energomash significantly increased [31] .

In 1959, the Department of Hydraulic Machines was transferred to the EnMF from the abolished Hydropower Faculty (Heads: in 1946-1974 - Professor V. S. Kvyatkovsky , in 1974-1982 - Professor G. V. Viktorov; in the 1953/54 academic year year began to train mechanical engineers in hydraulic machines ) and the General Technical Department of Hydraulics (Heads: in 1946-1972 - Professor S.V. Izbash, in 1972-1982 - Professor B.T. Emtsev). In 1983, both departments were merged into a single department of Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Machines (GGM), which was headed by Professor B. T. Yemtsev; in 1987, Professor G. M. Morgunov became his successor, and in 1995, Professor V. I. Golubev. The department conducted research on the hydromechanics of a viscous fluid, designing and experimental research of vane hydraulic turbines , hydraulics of various hydraulic structures , hydrodynamic calculations of flowing parts of hydraulic machines , design and study of hydraulic drives and hydropneumatic automation tools [32] .

The Department of Materials Resistance after Professor VV Bolotin came to its leadership (head of the department in 1958-1996; since 1974 - corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences , since 1992 - academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences ) has become a specialist since 1962, having begun training engineers -researchers specializing in Dynamics and Strength of Machines. In 1969, in connection with this, she was renamed the Department of Dynamics and Strength of Machines (PDM). The department launched scientific research on the study of vibrations and stability of elastic systems, the application of statistical methods in the mechanics of a deformable solid , the study of the strength and seismic resistance of elements of power equipment, the development of numerical methods in relation to the problems of mechanics of materials and structures [33] . In 1996-2011 Professor V.P. Chirkov was in charge of the department [34] .

The foundations for the development of the Department of Metal Technology were laid by such material scientists as professors I. A. Oding (head of the department in 1954-1964; since 1946 - corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences ), M. P. Markovets (head of the department in 1965 —1968), N. A. Olshansky (head in 1968–1984), I.V. Zuev (head in 1984–1997), V.M. Matyunin (head in 1998–2005) who founded the famous scientific schools. At the department, studies were launched in the field of studying the physicomechanical and technological properties of structural materials at different temperatures and loading conditions, developing electron beam technologies for welding materials of different classes, creating instruments for the on-line diagnostics of the structural and mechanical state of metal in the process of operating equipment at thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants NPP . In 1969, the department began training mechanical engineers in the specialty "Production and installation of equipment of nuclear power plants", and in 1988 - in the specialty "Machines and technology of highly efficient processing processes" [35] [36] .

In the middle of the 20th century, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics became one of the leading scientific and methodological centers that provided training for young teachers in Moscow in conducting practical classes and lecturing in theoretical mechanics ; many graduates of the mechmath of the Moscow State University of that time passed pedagogical practice “at Slobodiansky at MPEI at Termekh.” After M.G. Slobodiansky, the department was successively headed by representatives of the School of Mechanics of Moscow State University - professors I.V. Novozhilov (in 1975-1986), Yu. G. Martynenko (in 1986-2003), A.I. Kobrin (in 2004-2009); under their leadership, research was carried out in the field of gyroscopic systems and inertial navigation , rigid body dynamics in electric and magnetic fields, mechanics and control of robotic systems (manipulative and mobile robots ), computer modeling of multi-link systems of solids, asymptotic methods for studying singularly perturbed differential equations , nonholonomic mechanics . Since 1992, the department has become specialized: a new specialty of the mechanical-mathematical profile “Robots and Robotic Systems” was opened at it. Since 1998, students of the department annually took part in international and All-Russian festivals of mobile robots, regularly winning prizes in them [14] [37] . The staff of the department ( A.V. Koretsky , N.V. Osadchenko , A.I. Kobrin, V.G. Kuzmenko, M.N. Kirsanov , O.M. Kapustina) made a great contribution to the development of computer training tools in theoretical mechanics [38] [39] .

Enmi in the 21st Century

In 1998-2002 MPEI carried out work on changing the organizational structure, during which educational and scientific units of a new type — institutes — were created on the basis of existing faculties. Since July 1, 2002, the Faculty of Power Engineering was transformed into the Institute of Power Engineering and Mechanics (EnMI) . At the time of its foundation, the institute had more than 320 teachers and employees, more than 800 students studied. By this time, Energomash had trained about 10 thousand highly qualified specialists, hundreds of candidates and doctors of sciences [40] .

In 2010, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics (which was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences I.V. Merkuriev [14] in 2009) received a new name: Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Mechatronics (TMM) [41] . The department trained students in the direction of Mechatronics and Robotics: bachelors in the field of Computer Control Technologies in Robotics and Mechatronics, masters in the program Development of Computer Control Technologies and Mathematical Modeling in Robotics and Mechatronics.

The Department of Dynamics and Strength of Machines named after V.V. Bolotin (which was headed by associate professor S. F. Kuznetsov [34] in 2011) trained students in the field of “Applied Mechanics”: bachelors in the profile “Dynamics and Strength of Machines, Instruments and Equipment ”, Masters - under the program“ Dynamics and Strength of Machines, Instruments and Equipment ”.

At the Department of Metal Technology (in 2005 it was headed by Professor V.K. Dragunov), specialists are trained in two areas: "Mechanical Engineering" and "Power Engineering". At the same time, bachelors are trained in the profiles “Machines and Technologies of Highly Efficient Material Processing Processes” and “Production of Power Equipment”, and masters in the program “Production of Power Equipment” [36] .

Since September 1, 2014, as part of the restructuring of the University, carried out by the Rectorate and the Academic Council of the National Research University for Power Engineering, the Department of Steam Generation Engineering included the Department of Steam Generator Building (ASG) and the Department of Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Machines [42] . The abolished departments (which, like the PGT department, from the beginning of the 21st century provided training for specialists in the field of "Power Engineering") became part of the Department of Steam and Gas Turbines [43] . Currently, the faculty of PGT prepares bachelors in the profile “Gas-turbine, steam-turbine installations and engines” and masters in the program “Gas-turbine, steam-turbine installations and engines”; ASG department - preparation of bachelors in the profile “Boilers, combustion chambers and steam generators of nuclear power plants” and masters in the program “Power plants using organic and nuclear fuel”; GGM department - preparation of bachelors in the profile “Automated Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems and Units” and masters in the program “Research and Design of Automated Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems, Machines and Units”.

In November 2014, in accordance with a joint initiative of I. V. Merkuryev, K. G. Gadzhiev (head of the Department of Fundamentals of Machine Design) and A. S. Stepanova (director of the Center for Technological Support for Education at NRU MPEI), a new structural EnMI division - interdepartmental laboratory "Center for Energy Technologies and Robotics". The technical equipment of the laboratory includes three workstations for operators and equipment manufactured by KUKA : the industrial robot KUKA KR6 sixx R900 AGILUS and two mobile platforms KUKA youBot , each of which has a manipulator . Laboratory equipment is used in the educational process and for joint scientific research conducted at the departments of the Fundamentals of Machine Design and Theoretical Mechanics and Mechatronics [44] .

On September 1, 2016, the Department of Machine Dynamics and Strength (DPM) was joined to the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Mechatronics (TMM). The joint department was called the Department of Robotics, Mechatronics, Dynamics and Machine Strength (abbreviated name RMDiPM) [45] . The department continues to train students in the same areas in which both the departments included in its structure led it before their unification, and it consists of two departments: the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Mechatronics and the Department of Dynamics and Strength of Machines. There is a “Center for technological support of education” at the department (the supervisor is Associate Professor I. V. Orlov), which works with Moscow schoolchildren who are interested in robotics [46] .

Today, about 800 students study at EnMI. About 150 teachers work, including more than 20 professors and 90 associate professors. In total, about 12,000 graduates were trained [46] .
