Opinions

Count Ignatiev, military attache in the countries of Scandinavia, recalled:

the Russian mission existed in the full sense of the word at the expense of its envoy, the richest Bessarabian landowner Krupensky. My rare arrivals in Christiania brought him true joy, as they gave an extra excuse to overshadow all colleagues with their sometimes too emphasized eastern hospitality. The official duties of the Russian envoy were not burdensome: Russia's interests in Norway were exhausted at that time by observing the fishing convention. It was violated, however, from year to year by the enterprising Norwegian cod fishermen and was therefore guarded by Russian armed gunboats. In contrast to my other two messengers [approx. I. A. Kudashev in Denmark and F. A. Budberg in Sweden], people who were perfectly well-mannered and afraid of their own shadow, Krupensky with his family’s southern expansiveness treated not only his only secretary, but also Norwegian officials as their own serfs . Democratic freedom-loving Norway could not have liked this eastern satrap.
