ARts Composition

  • artsd is a real-time daemon mixing streams. The Sound Server is independent of KDE and can be used by itself, for example, to implement software and other filters.
  • artsbuilder is an application for manually creating aRts configurations using the supplied audio mixers, synthesizers and other devices. The resulting filter description files have a simple text format and can be edited manually.
  • artsshell is a text-mode program that allows you to manage a running aRts server. In particular, it can be used to add / remove filters created in artsbuilder
  • artscontrol is a program that allows you to change the mixer volume levels, view a list of running aRts and add / remove aRts filters.

Future aRts

On December 2, 2004 , the creator and chief developer of aRts, Stefan Westerfeld, announced that he was leaving the project. After that, the project became part of KDE .

In KDE 4, developers replaced aRts with a new multimedia system known as Phonon . [1] Phonon is an interface on top of other systems such as GStreamer or Xine .
