Biography
Marlowe was born in Southwark in London, and studied for 5 years [1] as a marine painter with Samuel Scott, as well as in London St. Martin's Lane Academy .
He became a member of the United Society of Artists and from 1762 to 1764 participated in the exhibitions of the society in Spring Gardens. He was hired to represent country houses.
From 1765 to 1768, Marlowe, on the advice of the Duchess of Northumberland, traveled to France and Italy. After returning to the UK, he resumed his participation in the Society of Artists, and settled on Leicester Square in London. He became a fellow in the community in 1771.
In 1788, Marlowe moved to Tuikenem, began to exhibit at the Royal Academy and regularly sent his works until 1796, and then, after the break, in 1807 (when he sent the painting “ Twickenham Ferry by Moonlight ” - Twickenham Ferry by Moonlight ) .
Marlowe died in Twickenham on January 14, 1813.
Work
Marlowe worked in oil and watercolor , painted sea scenes and landscapes; it was influenced by the work of Richard Wilson [1] and Canaletto . According to criticism, “his paintings are elegant, but devoid of special power, and his mastery of watercolors did not advance beyond tinting” [2] [3] , “his watercolors are rather weak in the manner of execution, but his views of the Thames are believable and subtly colored” [4] . He depicted mainly British rural scenes, but also painted several paintings according to his Italian sketches, and some of the latter were etched, like some views of the Thames. Engravings were made on his views of the bridges at Westminster and Blackfriars.
Marlowe exhibited all 152 works - 125 in the Society of Artists, 2 in the Free Society of Artists, and 25 in the Royal Academy.
Many of Marlowe's works are in the Government Art Collection and in the Tate Gallery , some in regional British galleries, for example, in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery [5] , one landscape “Coastal View” is in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum [6] .
