Biography
Born in the village of Grinev in the family of a priest. On the recommendation of Bishop Leo Sheptytsky , he was sent to study in the newly opened general seminary for Greek Catholics " Barbareum " in Vienna , graduated in 1781 with a Doctor of Theology degree. He was consecrated priest in 1783. Since 1783 - canon, the first rector of the newly founded Greek Catholic Theological Seminary in Lviv (1783, 1787-1796), professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Lviv (1784-1787), rector of the university (1796-1797).
From 1796 - Bishop of Przemysl, in 1798 - Bishop of Lviv, from 1804 - Bishop of Kholm.
Together with Mikhail Garasevich, he achieved the resumption of the Galician Metropolis in 1808, becoming Metropolitan of Galitsky.
He was the initiator of the founding of Greek Catholic parishes in Chernivtsi , Suceava and other cities of Bukovina .
In addition to pastoral letters, he published anti-Napoleonic brochures in Polish: “Who is the attacker: Austria or France?”, “Reflections of the Austrian patriot on some articles in foreign newspapers” (1809). During the Franco-Polish offensive of 1807-1809 and the temporary occupation of Lviv in May - June 1809 by the Polish army, General Alexander Rozhnetsky , who fought on the side of Napoleon I, refused the oath to the French emperor and left the city, but was arrested by the Poles and interned in the city of Stryi . He was released after the retreat of the Polish troops at the end of June 1809. For allegiance to Austria, he was awarded the Order of Leopold. He donated his library of 8 thousand volumes to the metropolitan chapter of Lviv.
