Observatory Street (Kiev)

Observatory Street ( Ukrainian: Observatory Vulitsa ) is a street in the Shevchenkovsky district of the city ​​of Kiev , the area of Kudryavets . It runs from Sichovy Sagittarius Street to Boulevard-Kudryavskaya Street .

Content

History

In the days of Kievan Rus, this area was part of the trade and craft settlement Kopyrev end . According to the annals, it was part of the Shchekavitsky hills, so some historians assume that the chronicle Shchekavitsa is the very hill on which the observatory stands and the Kiev prince Oleg was supposedly buried here in 912.

Intensive settlement of Lukyanovka , Kudryavts and, in particular, Observatory Street began in 1845 after a catastrophic rainfall on Podil . In the 1930s, a number of constructivism-style buildings were built on Observatory Street (Nos. 9, 23).

Name Origin

The street got its name in the middle of the XIX century, in honor of the observatory of Kiev University , which was built in 1841-1845. At first it was called Observatory Lane .

On Observatory Street was the Transfiguration of the Savior Church of the XIX century, destroyed in the 1930s.

The writers Wanda Vasilevskaya and A. E. Korneychuk lived in building No. 6. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR D. A. Grave lived in building No. 9, and astronomer M. P. Dichenko in No. 16.
