Kurunegala ( eng. Kurunegala , Sinhala. කුරුණෑගල , there. குருனகல ) is a city in Sri Lanka , the administrative center of the North-Western Province and Kurunegala County .

Geography and climate
The city is located about 94 km from Colombo and 42 km from Kandy , at an altitude of 116 m above sea level. Located on a plain, the northern part of Kurunegala is slightly higher than the south. The climate is characterized as equatorial, the average annual rainfall is 2095 mm.
Population
As of 2001, the population of the city was 30,315 people. 73.66% are Sinhalese ; 15.71% - Larakalla ; 7.84% - Sri Lankan Tamils; 1.23% are Malays [1] . The most common religion is Buddhism.
