Biography

In 1848 he was ordained a priest , after which he worked as secretary of Cardinal Johannes von Geissel . April 8, 1853 he entered the monastic order of the Jesuits, after which he studied in Bonn, Berlin and Tübingen.

October 27, 1858 arrived in Bombay , where he began to engage in missionary activity. He served as a parish priest in Goa , participated in the founding of the Jesuit College of St. Francis Xavier.

Following the appointment of Walter Staines-Bisshop as the headquarters of the Bengal Apostolic Vicariate, Leo Merin served as the Apostolic Vicar of the Diocese of Bombay.

February 2, 1868 was ordained a bishop.

He participated in the First Vatican Council , where he was a member of a minority party opposing the adoption of the dogma of papal infallibility. Leo Merin voted against the adoption of the apostolic constitution Pastor Aeternus .

In 1876, he was appointed by the Holy See as an apostolic visitor to the Eastern Catholic churches in the vicinity of Kerala .

From 1881 to 1885 founded the parish in Kendal, an institution for the deaf and lepers in Bombay.

On September 27, 1887, Leo Mören was appointed Archbishop of the Diocese of Port Louis, where he worked until his death on June 1, 1895. He was buried in Port Louis Cathedral.
