Mikhail Mikhailovich Karpovich ( August 3, 1888 , Tiflis - November 7, 1959 , Cambridge , Massachusetts ) - Russian-American historian , one of the founders of American Russian studies .

Biography
Born in Tiflis. Nephew historian A. E. Presnyakova . In his youth, he was fond of left ideas , during the revolution of 1905 he joined the Social Revolutionaries , for which he was arrested and expelled from the city. In 1907-1908, in Paris, he talked in a friendly manner with O. E. Mandelstam , in 1957 he wrote memoirs about him, where he reported on a number of the poet’s non-surviving poems (and quoted one line).
He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University (1914), where V. Klyuchevsky still taught at that time.
In 1916, Karpovich was mobilized and sent to serve in the Ministry of War , where he was secretary of the Special Meeting on Defense .
In May 1917, Karpovich became the secretary of B. A. Bakhmetyev , who was appointed ambassador to the United States, and left for America. After the Russian embassy in Washington closed in 1924, Karpovich moved to New York, where he earned his living from the book trade, translations and lecturing.
In 1927, on the recommendation of M. I. Rostovtsev, he was invited to Harvard University , where he taught Russian history and literature. Under the direction of Karpovich, many future well-known Russianists defended their dissertations. He taught the course of Russian history at the future of US President John F. Kennedy .
Karpovich was a long-time editor of the New York New Journal and one of the founders and co-editors of The Russian Review .
He was buried in the cemetery of the Assumption Women's Novodiveevsky monastery in Nanuette, New York.
