Description
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was established in 1991 as India’s highest sports award, awarded to the country's best athlete in the past year (the previously established “ Arjun Award ” is awarded to the best athletes in individual sports). The award is named after the late Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi .
Laureate Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna receives a sum of 750 thousand rupees , exempted from taxes. The cash prize is accompanied by the presentation of a medal and a diploma [1] .
Service Order
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Prize is awarded for the most outstanding sporting achievements during the past year at the level of the Olympic Games , the Asian Games , the Commonwealth Games , championships and world cups and competitions of a similar level of representation. The prize is awarded by a special commission appointed by the government of India. The commission consists of 13 people: ten athletes and three sports administrators, including the Director General of the Ministry of Sports of India. At the same time, with the exception of representatives of official departments, you can become a member of the commission again not earlier than in two years. Candidates for the award have the right to nominate all the national sports federations of India (from one to three nominees in each sport), the general director of the Ministry of Sports of India (up to three candidates) and laureates of previous years (one candidate).
The award is awarded only to individual athletes, but not to teams, even if the winner has achieved success in the team sport. Only one prize per year; an exception can be made for such extraordinary occasions as winning an Olympic medal. An athlete may be awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Prize only once in a career [1] .
