The New Word (1893-1897)

New Word - a monthly scientific, literary and political journal; according to the dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron, it was founded in 1895 by I. A. Vatalin [1] [2] , and according to the Literary Encyclopedia in 1893 by I. Potanin [3] .

In May 1895 [3] passed to O. N. Popova (official editors - A. A. Sleptsov , then A. N. Popov ). S. N. Krivenko became the head of the editorial office, and the magazine became the main organ of populism. The most active participants were Y. V. Abramov , V. V. Vorontsov , P. V. Zasodimsky , D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak , V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko , L. E. Obolensky , V. A. Timiryazev, A. Skabichevsky , V.G. Yarotsky and others.

In March 1897, with the transition of the magazine to M. N. Semenov , the former employees left the “New Word”, which became the organ of young economists [1] . The Narodniks were replaced by Marxists - G. V. Plekhanov , V. I. Zasulich , Yu. O. Martov , A. M. Kalmykova , P. B. Struve , V. Ya. Bogucharsky , M. I. Tugan-Baranovsky and dr [3] . The magazine published an addition by F. Engels to the third volume of Capital under the heading “The Law of Value and Profit Level”. Lenin published his work “ On the Characterization of Economic Romanticism . Sismondi and our domestic sismondists ”and“ Regarding a newspaper article ” [4] .

The art department was represented by such names as M. Gorky , V. Veresaev , E. Chirikov and others.

On December 10, 1897, according to the decision of three ministers and chief prosecutor of the Holy Synod K. Pobedonostsev, the magazine was finally banned [3] .
