Company History
In 1965, the Japanese company Hoshino Gakki ( Japanese 星野 楽 器 , translated as Hoshino Musical Instruments) , a manufacturer of musical instruments including the Ibanez brand, began production of inexpensive and non-professional drum sets under the Star brand. Production facilities were deployed in a subsidiary of Tama Seisakusho, which since 1962 has been producing musical equipment ( guitars and amplifiers ) under the brand name Ibanez. In 1966, the production of guitars and amplifiers was transferred to another division of Hoshino Gakki, and Tama focused on the production of drums. As part of the Star lineup, the production of Imperialstar, Royalstar and Swingstar models was launched, the first two of which were thrown out in the USA and replaced more expensive companies such as Ludwig on the budget model market.
In 1974, Yongpei Hoshino, the owner of the company, decided to focus his efforts on professional equipment, and from this year the TAMA® brand appeared . Tama is the name of the wife of the owner of the company, translated into Russian means "gem".
In 1977, Tama Drums, together with Drum Workshop, acquired the Camco Drum Company , while Drum Workshop received all the equipment, and Tama received the trademark, documentation, patents and all technological developments. At that time, under the Camco brand, the best pedals for drums were produced, and the Tama management, with the help of Camco engineers, decided to concentrate on producing high-quality professional pedals, and to produce drum kits for beginners at a low price level. However, the quality of even the low-budget manufactured units turned out to be such that, due to their low cost, professionals began to prefer them.
Since then, Tama Drums has developed and released many drum kit lines: Artstar, Crestar, Fibrestar, Granstar, Stagestar. [1] . Standing apart from the drum kits are a series of high-quality professional Starclassic kits that have gained acclaim among drummers playing Rockstar heavy music and Techstar electronic drums produced since 1984.
Tama was the first to introduce innovations that have become the standard on the market today, for example three-legged racks, crane racks, Octaban melodic toms , a gong bass drum, folding tops of racks, an X-hat, in addition to a closed hi-hat . [2]
Currently, the production of Tama drums is concentrated in two places: in Japan , in the city of Seto , highly professional installations of the Starclassic Maple and Starclassic Performer Birch series are produced, the limited edition Exotix and wooden snare drums . The rest of the company's products are manufactured in a factory opened in 2004 in Guangzhou . [2]
